Smart City

A smart city uses digital technologies and innovations to improve the lives of its residents, make city operations more efficient, and promote sustainable development. Traditional urban infrastructure and services are optimized through the use of sensors, data analytics, and other digital solutions.

The funding programme

As part of the Model Projects Smart Cities (MPSC) funding program, the German government is supporting 73 model municipalities across Germany on their way to becoming smart cities with 830 million euros. The aim of the funding program is to test practical solutions for the design of sustainable urban and municipal development geared towards the common good and to contribute to their dissemination in Germany.

More information about the funding program here.

Smart City Bamberg

Bamberg has been part of the funding program since November 2020. With its concept of a “smart world heritage site,” the city impressed the jury and was selected as a model project. After initially gathering project ideas from administration, business, research, and the public, the Smart City Bamberg team developed a strategy for a smart Bamberg by March 2023. This strategy has been underway since April 2023, and innovative digital applications are emerging from the ideas. All of this is being done in close coordination with city departments, the university, and the people of Bamberg.
