Our vision for Bamberg

All data relevant to urban development and administration is centrally available to the relevant departments. The processes in the city administration are fast, efficient and less prone to errors. This benefits not only the employees, but above all the people of Bamberg. They can also view non-personal data on the city’s development and form their own impression of various aspects and correlations. The storage and management of the data remains in the hands of the city administration and is subject to strict security and data protection regulations.

Technology

The development of an urban data platform is being driven forward in Bamberg together with other German cities as part of the Civitas Core Community. The development is technologically based on freely available software in order to be able to meet the future needs of digital urban development in the long term together with other municipalities. This is based on existing open source software, which is being expanded and reassembled for our needs. Further information on the technology used can be found in the development community’s documentation.

Project description

In future, the data platform will be the center of all data flows in Bamberg. It will bring together the various data that has so far been stored decentrally and in isolation in different offices. A structure is being created that enables different offices to access one and the same data set. This is provided by one responsible person and can be used for the respective applications. This hub for data also forms the basis for the other Smart City applications. By using centralized software that also guarantees compliance with data protection guidelines according to the latest standards and stores them on secure servers, even sensitive data can be handled and managed in a future-proof manner.

Where does the data platform help in practice? A few examples:

  • A street is renamed in the central data record. Different offices directly use the same, updated street name.
  • Roadworks announcements from the transport authority can be called up by the municipal utilities without delay and incorporated into the bus route planning.
  • The offers of the vacation portal are automatically displayed in the “Here & Now” map within the Bamberg app.

Veranschaulichendes Bild zum Textabschnitt

„The data platform is our central networking tool so that data can flow securely and effortlessly through Bamberg. With this digital infrastructure, we are creating the basis for innovative digital services that support citizens, administration, research and companies and enable data-based decisions. Instead of Excel files sent by email, we automatically exchange data between a wide variety of systems “
